Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord guide

Get a Bannerlord dedicated server token

Make the TaleWorlds token a Bannerlord custom server needs with customserver.gettoken, where the file is, why it lasts three months and why consoles cannot.

Updated

Every Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord custom server needs a token that TaleWorlds issues to the owner of a copy of the game. The server sends it when it starts, and TaleWorlds refuses to list a server without a valid one. You make the token in the game itself, with one console command.

1. Make the token

  1. Start the PC game and open Multiplayer, so you are in the multiplayer lobby.
  2. Press Alt + ~ to open the console.
  3. Type customserver.gettoken and press Enter.

The game writes the token to a file in your Documents folder:

Documents\Mount and Blade II Bannerlord\Tokens\DedicatedCustomServerAuthToken.txt

Open it with a text editor. The token is one long line of letters and digits.

What about consoles?

The token comes from the PC game's console, so you need a PC copy of Bannerlord (Steam, Epic Games or GOG). We know of no way to make one on PlayStation or Xbox, which have no file system you can reach and no developer console. The PC copy does not have to be the machine that hosts or plays on the server: you only need it once every three months.

2. Use it

On a server you run yourself, copy the token into DedicatedCustomServerAuthToken.txt in the Mount and Blade II Bannerlord/Tokens folder of the user that runs the server, as described in setting up a Bannerlord dedicated server.

3. Renew it every three months

A token stops working three months after you make it. A server whose token has expired, or that TaleWorlds refuses for another reason, stops at start and logs:

Login Failed! Server is shutting down.

Make a new token the same way and replace the file.

Keep it private

The token belongs to your account. Anyone who has it can host servers as you, so do not post it in a Discord, a screenshot or a support ticket. If it leaks, make a new one.

On HostForge

Paste it once

You paste the token when you create the server, or later in its Settings. HostForge keeps it for that server only, never shows it again, passes it to the server as a file so it never appears in the console, and the server page warns you ten days before it expires. Only the server's owner and administrators can replace it.
